The H-engine—basically two separate engines housed within the same engine block—comprises two switchable parallel piston banks, independently fueled by gasoline and CNG. Startup Eco-Motive has developed what it calls the first dual-fuel “H” engine; it recently received a patent (# 8807098 ) on the design.

The concept engine uses the Bosch electro-hydraulic valve system (EHVS). The engine has two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder. The team was able to test all conventional and pneumatic engine modes on the concept engine. The team replaced one exhaust valve per cylinder with a charge valve.
