More than three-fourths of all oil and gas production in the US Gulf of Mexico has a lower greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity than the basin-wide average, according to a new S&P Global Commodity Insights analysis. The 2 kgCO 2 e/boe to nearly 50 kgCO 2 e/boe range includes 99% total 2022 production covered by the US Gulf of Mexico analysis.

Glen Cayley, Technical Director of Shell’s exploration and production activities in Europe, said that the high winds and waves over the weekend led to a substantial reduction in the size of the oil sheen. Shell continues to expect that the oil sheen will disperse naturally due to wave action and that it will not reach the shore, he said.

The new survey finds continuing support for a range of policies to address the nation's energy supply, including requiring improved vehicle fuel efficiency and increasing federal funding for research on wind, solar and hydrogen technology. Currently, 51% favor allowing more offshore oil and gas drilling, up from 44% in June.
