There’s also a cleaner vehicle discount of 100% which applies only to battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles from 25 October 2021. This continues in October when low-emission petrol and diesel must start to pay. This discount isn’t automatic though, so you need to apply for it. It costs £12.50

Over a year with around 260 working days, that’s almost £4,000 of savings compared to a petrol or diesel van which doesn’t qualify for the discount. There’s also a 100% discount for any car or van which meets the cleaner vehicle-discount criteria, having replaced the previous Ultra Low Emission Discount (ULED).

Thankfully, the UK Government has taken the crucial step of banning the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. EVs are far less reliant on these dirty fuels than petrol and diesel cars, especially when batteries are charged using renewable energy. That’s a huge saving compared to cars with petrol or diesel engines.
