This compact and lightweight clean diesel engine is designed for combustion efficiency, just like the larger displacement SKYACTIV-D 2.2. The advent of stricter emissions regulations leads to a delay in combustion until after TDC (with a lower cylinder pressure and temperature), although this causes fuel economy to worsen.
