GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform.

I wish the thing was for sale as-is. Competition is going to force them to produce a comfortable, usable, extended range EV for that price, and I will just have to wait. Well they did give brief bursts of acceleration through the parking lot to show that it does have some Roadster goodness to it.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. The extended-range version will be focused on retail customers.

In fact, the Idaho National Labs reported to the US Department of Energy that the present fleet of Chevrolet Volts in the USA has been shown to use about 80% electricity and 20% gasoline when averaged over the year. In fact, use of these fuels is required by law in many states of the USA. These PHEV Volts have a 35 mile (56 km) AER.
