GM announced that the first buyers of the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability will be eligible for one of 4,400 free home charging stations. The program will provide Volt owners with a 240-volt charge station from either ECOtality, Inc. or Coulomb Technologies.

Purchasers of a Chevrolet Volt who qualify for EV Project participation in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston areas will receive a free home charger and credit toward the installation of the charger. The EV Project began last year, with grant funding through the US Department of Energy from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Project documentation prepared to support the grant award indicated that production of battery cells would transition from LG Chem’s South Korean facility to the Michigan plant beginning in 2012, assuming that demand grew as expected. Less than half of the expected number of jobs had been created to support the project.
