Monthly new vehicle market share for hybrids. Buoyed by the US government’s CARS (“Cash for Clunkers”) program, US auto sales slowed their decline in the US in July, dropping on 12.1% year-on-year to 35,429 units, representing a 3.55% new vehicle sales market share for the month—the highest monthly share yet.

Dingell, Congresswoman Betty Sutton, Congressman Jay Inslee, and Congressman Bart Stupak reached an agreement on a “Cash for Clunkers” scrappage program. New light trucks or SUVs with mileage of at least 18 mpg are eligible for vouchers. There will be a finite number of these vouchers, based on this vehicle class’s market share.

Other highlights of the report include: Many new technologies are rapidly gaining market share. The use of gasoline direct injection systems has grown from essentially zero in MY 2007 to a projected 24% of the market in MY 2012. Both conventional hybrids and diesel vehicles have increased market share slightly since MY 2007.

Gasoline cars account for 85% of cars bought through the scrappage scheme, a higher proportion than in the overall market (39.9%) between May and September. New cars bought through the scheme had average CO 2 emissions of 131.1 g/km CO 2 , 27.4% below the average CO 2 (181.9 g/km CO 2 ) of the scrapped cars.

Other highlights of the latest Trends report include: Light truck market share decreased in MY 2012, but continues to be variable. Light trucks (pickups, minivans/vans, and truck SUVs), accounted for 36% of all light-duty vehicle production in MY 2012, the second lowest level since 1993. Market share of gasoline turbo vehicles.
