Even on land, getting oil from tar sands depletes water and other resources and doubles oil’s carbon footprint. And oil only seems cheap. We won’t need new power plants, since we have enough off-peak electricity to recharge as many retrofits as we can build. But let’s realize: defending our nation is never cheap.
