ClipperCreek, an Auburn, CA based manufacturer of electric vehicle charging equipment, has just announced the shipment of its 5,000th unit. Some of those units are being paid for by a California Energy Commission grant to upgrade existing Avcon charging stations across California. Might be a monetized, networked system.

A new Federal Grant will enable many electric vehicle early adopters to get their chargers for free. (A Read more in the article: Get in Line for 4,600 Free Electric Car Battery Chargers. California-based Coulomb Technologies makes the program’s ChargePoint chargers, which were shipped to 130 customers in 2009.

Because so many consumers compare the EV charging process to that of filling up an ICE car at a gas station, there’s an assumption by some that we have to try and replicate the gas station model for refueling electric vehicles. PHEVs: Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) currently comprise nearly 37% of all EVs sold in the US since 2011.

I wrote back in December about my unhappy experience attempting to charge my loaner LEAF at San Francisco City Hall's electric car charging stations. But one shouldn't have to know Bob to plug in your new car. It's city, state and federal policy to enable electric cars for the emissions and petroleum reduction they provide.
