BMW targeting doubling energy density of battery cells by 2030, with current i3 as basis

Green Car Congress

Taking the technology currently in the BMW i3 as a basis, by 2030 we will be able to double the energy density of our battery cells—and therefore also the operating range of the vehicles for our customers. In future, cobalt will be sourced directly from mines in Australia and Morocco, and lithium from countries including Australia.

BNEF: producing battery materials in the DRC could lower supply-chain emissions and add value to the country’s cobalt

Green Car Congress

Capital cost to build a 10k metric-ton battery precursor plant. Automakers in Europe can lower their emissions by shortening the transport distance and capitalizing on the DRC’s hydroelectric powered grid and proximity to raw materials. This is three times cheaper than what a similar plant in the US would cost. Source: BNEF.
