The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. Extended-range electric vehicles — such as the Chevy Volt, which GM says will recharge in three hours — offer another route, adding a small gas engine to keep drivers from feeling stranded without access to fuel. The Roadster can go 244 miles EPA. That means typical range is at least 200 miles per charge.

For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. If every car accepts 2 or 4 or 6 of these universal packs then true economies of scale can kick in in their manufacture. my idea is that it would work the way propane tanks work now.
