Sales of Volvo Cars´ Recharge models of fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars increased by 31% in January year-on-year, accounting for 40.7% The increase was led by markets such as the UK, Italy and Belgium. Recharge sales, which in addition to fully electric cars also includes plug-in hybrids, accounted for 59.8%

You might not know it to look at them, but these two cars—one Swedish, one Chinese—share underpinnings and a parent company. Volvo and its Chinese parent Geely are very serious about selling cars that plug in. It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery.

In January 2011, Shanghai was selected as an international electric vehicle pilot city by the Chinese government and the Jiading district of Shanghai was announced as an electric vehicle demonstration zone. The Volvo C30 Electric is manufactured in the Volvo Cars Ghent plant in Belgium and finalized in the Torslanda plant in Sweden.

The majority of American consumers surveyed (58%) expect an electric vehicle to recharge its battery in two hours or less, and nearly one in four Americans (23%) expect a 30-minute charge time. Chinese consumers appear the most willing to pay a price premium, but even still, 44% indicate they will not pay anything extra.
