Who, after all, hasn’t tired of having to plug in and unplug their phone and other rechargeable gizmos? Indeed, it’s hard to recharge or power a device when the air gap is just a few centimeters, much less a few meters. Indeed, efficiencies can exceed 70 percent, more than double that of a typical solar cell. It’s a nuisance.

A key thing, he said, will be to recharge the batteries at an acceptable time for the electricity grid — to “make sure people aren’t charging at the very peak, peak time,” like late afternoon when the electricity grid is already weighted down by demands like air conditioning. The closest to that source is solar.
