As a comparison , in 2011, there were only two battery electric and 29 hybrid electric vehicle models offered for sale in the US. There are three main electric vehicle drivetrain designs that an EV manufacturer can choose to pursue: battery powered , hybrid , and or fuel cell.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010.
