The higher-voltage variant will support moves by European vehicle manufacturers announced earlier this year to introduce 48 volt passenger vehicle power networks to help meet the requirement for lower fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. The project is being supported and funded by the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC).

Electric vehicle’s cost-effectiveness improved with battery replacement and opportunity charging, but it was not enough to match the conventional platforms. For the electric-powered vehicles, the electricity cost is relatively low, reflecting the low cost of electricity and the high efficiency of batteries and motors.

Hybrid Sonata model year 2011, possible PHEV version in 2013. Mazda Ford Partner was reported to be developing Series PHEV based on Mazda 5 MPV platform.
