The Volt , provided GM can get the lithium battery right , will go about 40 miles on an electric charge. At that point, the internal combustion engine kicks in and recharges the battery while you are driving. Imagine using your laptop computer on a battery. It runs down. Good, sexy cars and a great price.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna. Plans Cadillac Converj, Opel Ampera, other versions. Plans Saturn Vue PHEV-10.

The Volt is, and always has been, more than than an electric car. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. Wired Home Subscribe Sections Cars 2.0 But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. Thats short-sighted.
