In designing the second-generation system, GM engineers built on the knowledge and data gained from the first-generation Volt. GM took a blank-sheet approach to designing the second-generation system. Clutches are OWC1, C1 and B1. A key decision was to split EV propulsion between two motor-generators (motors A and B).
