He was born in 1921 in Azerbaijan, then part of the Soviet Union, and moved to Iran at age 10. His choice of subject for his master’s thesis, though, marked one of the first times he would sail against the prevailing technical winds. It was a comfortable, undemanding environment; I was not challenged internally.
