For the initial customer order, the JV will leverage Magna’s highly integrated e-drive system with a focus on the production of the system mainly for the Chinese market. Additionally since 2012 Magna has supplied Volvo with the electrified rear axle drive system (eRAD) featured on the Volvo V60 and S60 plug-in hybrid models.

Australia-based CAP-XX Limited, a developer of thin, prismatic supercapacitors, has developed a supercapacitor module which supplies the cranking current to start the engine in Stop-Start vehicles (also known as start-stop, idle-stop, or micro-hybrid vehicles), reducing wear on the battery and eliminating the need for larger, more expensive ones.

The potential is enormous because the current grid has sufficient energy capacity to supply every vehicle in the United States if every one of them was a PHEV. These can be supplied by our current energy distribution and dispensing network without changing the infrastructure. To ignore this potential is wasteful and foolish.

The three leading new options to re-supply our autos with energy are charging at home, battery swap stations and fast charge stations. Most charge points available today take much longer to re-energize batteries than it does to fill a gas-powered cars tank. They have several stations already built and plan on thousands more.
