Lutz, who retired earlier this year, called the car Detroits "moon shot" and an attempt to wrest the mantle of innovation back from the Japanese. If no one wants your car (because people think it sucks), then no one will buy it, regardless of how good the fuel economy may or may not be. GM doesnt have a chance.
