A Bloomfield, Michigan startup is developing light- and medium-duty series plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain systems—initially as conversions, but ultimately extending to an OEM basis. The conversion can double or even triple fuel economy, thereby severely limiting carbon dioxide emissions. But the new rules could make it virtually impossible for current Prius owners to transform their cars into super-efficient vehicles that get up to 150 mpg. mpg on what was mostly a freeway excursion.

Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) That said, the interest in conversions continues to validate hybrid technology as a core technology thats here to stay.
