It is powered by a battery pack that when fully charged has a range of up to 40 miles; it also has a small gas engine that turns a generator that charges the battery once it is depleted.

We must act quickly as the planet is warming due to CO 2 production from burning fossil fuels. In addition, we need no more biofuel than what is currently in production now. Fossil material is not evil in itself; it is vital for the production of medicine, space age plastics, and other advanced materials.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. The extended-range version will be focused on retail customers.

Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. I would prefer to recharge at home, and could do so.
