Azerbaijan built its economy on its abundant fossil fuels. Fossil fuels still represent 90 percent of Azerbaijans exports and up to 50 percent of its GDP, according to the International Energy Agency. The town was destroyed and abandoned during Azerbaijans recent war with the Armenia-backed breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
