Subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption of fossil fuels jumped to over $400 billion. Increased use of alternatives to oil-based transport fuels (gasoline, diesel and LPG) also help to temper oil-demand growth, though to a much smaller degree than efficiency gains in vehicles with internal combustion engines.
