Improving performance of 2-methylfuran as alternative SI fuel using cooled EGR

In a paper in the journal Fuel , researchers at Tianjin University report on the use of cooled EGR to improve the overall performance of 2-methylfuran (MF) as an alternative fuel. However, an appropriate level of cool EGR improved the combustion and emissions, particularly through knock suppression and reduced NO x emissions.

However, the cycle results in higher HC and CO emissions due to the low in-cylinder temperature. The current development of downsized spark ignition (SI) engines with boost pressure is a proven way of increasing the thermal efficiency and reducing CO 2 emissions. In addition, the backflow results in decreased torque at low speeds.
