This will lead to more conversions. We have startups like Arcimoto and Aptera who will soon start manufacturing and selling reverse trikes that resemble the Strom R3. Once they launch affordable electric cars in India, the BIG ICE Mafia can’t offer any more excuses and will have to think of launching small electric cars.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.

Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) That said, the interest in conversions continues to validate hybrid technology as a core technology thats here to stay.

Sure, if you need to make lots of long trips in a car, and can only afford to have one car, then probably a Tesla’s not for you. Or if you don’t want to go into details, just compare the Volt to the Aptera :-) — James 15. Where is affordable. How about using a competition sailplane for comparison, instead?
