The proposal calls for what’s known as “solar geoengineering”: cooling the planet by deflecting sunlight that would otherwise strike the planet. Little is known about how, or whether, solar geoengineering might work and how the particles would react and move in the stratosphere. There were nearly 40 million such flights in 2019.
