Volvo Cars has selected South Carolina as the location of its new $500-million factory in the US. Construction will begin in early autumn 2015, with the first vehicles expected to roll off the assembly line in 2018. The new plant will make latest generation Volvo models for sale in the United States and for export.

Mercedes-Benz will build the next generation eSprinter electric van, which is based on the newly developed Electric Versatility Platform ( earlier post ), at three locations: North Charleston, South Carolina; and Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde in Germany. By the end of 2020, the Plant in Charleston had about 1,600 employees.

On 23 June 1992, the BMW Group announced its decision to build its US plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. From 2018 to 2021 we will invest further 600 million US dollars in manufacturing infrastructure for future generations of the BMW X models. The BMW Group produces BMW X models in Spartanburg for the US and global markets.

Volvo Cars announced that the next generation of the XC90 large premium SUV will be built in its new manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina from 2021. The South Carolina plant will start production of the next-generation S60 in the fall of 2018. A third Chinese plant is currently under construction.

The forthcoming Polestar 3 will be manufactured alongside new Volvo vehicles at the Volvo Cars production center in Ridgeville, South Carolina. Polestar vehicles built in South Carolina will be for sale in the United States. The Ridgeville plant was opened in 2018 by Volvo Cars.
