Due in part to Honda’s ability to advance fuel economy through conventional engine technology, the Civic lineup will no longer include a hybrid or a natural gas model, according to John Mendel, Executive Vice President, Automobile Division American Honda Motor Co., Both of these products with the end of the 2015 model year.

As one example cited, the company has increased its use of high-strength steel and other lightweight materials to reduce vehicle weight, and thus improve fuel economy, while still meeting standards for vehicle safety. Chrysler is also seeking to reduce electrical loads through application of higher efficiency fans and fuel pumps.

For participating communities, RMI is suggesting a stretch target of 2% of registered vehicles by 2015. Community members in Portland, Oregon; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Raleigh, North Carolina soon expanding to the Triangle region have already agreed to work with RMI’s Project Get Ready. Californians purchasing a new Civic Natural Gas vehicle are now eligible for an immediate California Energy Commission $1,000 purchase credit supplied directly by certified Honda Civic Natural Gas dealers at the time of purchase. Per California’s AB 266, the expiration date for the white stickers has been extended to 1 January 2019.
