Shanghai GM has outlined the next phase of its “Drive to Green” product strategy—launched in 2008 ( earlier post )—for 2011-2015. Several targets announced in 2008 have already been achieved. By 2012, all models sold in China will have the capability of being upgraded to comply with the Euro V (China Phase 5) emission standard.

Among the highlights of the brief summaries was the conclusion that while the Chevy Volt extended range electric vehicle holds promise, “ it will likely be too expensive to be commercially successful in the short-term. ”. For example, of its top 20 profit contributors in 2008, nine were cars.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At these prices, people are buying the "environmental feature" -- they want to be among the first owners of the worlds cleanest extended-range vehicles. They are early adopters, buying "Version 1.0" So far, most start as hybrids.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform. See our frequent comments at our news archive.
