Review of co-processing of biocrudes in oil refineries

Green Car Congress

Liquid intermediates from pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) can be co-processed in an oil refinery along with conventional crude oil. After pyrolysis, the vapors are condensed to give a dark brown fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO). In fast pyrolysis, biomass is quickly heated to around 500 °C in the absence of oxygen.

Researchers find carbon-nanotube-based fluids improve enhanced oil recovery methods

Green Car Congress

Researchers in India are using multi-wall carbon nanotube-optimized surfactant-polymer flooding for enhanced oil recovery. In an open-access paper in the journal Fuel , they report that their experimental application of carbon nanotube-based fluids yielded an oil recovery factor of approximately 70% of the original oil in place.

California Governor orders end to fracking by 2024, instructs CARB to analyze pathways to phase out oil-production by 2045

Green Car Congress

Additionally, Governor Newsom requested that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) analyze pathways to phase out oil extraction across the state by no later than 2045. California’s production of oil has been steadily dropping since 1985. According to the California Energy Commission, California oil represented 34.9%

Researchers use distillation to improve biocrude oil properties for fuel blending

Green Car Congress

Biocrude oil produced via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of biomass could provide a low-carbon supplement for transportation fuel supply. However, physical processes—such as fractional distillation as used in oil refineries—are cheaper and more reliable. Distillation increased the H:C (4.2–13.7%); 1 , respectively.
