Recent spy shots posted by our sister site Motor Authority show that despite delays, General Motors is continuing to develop the plug-in version of its Two-Mode Hybrid system. What up with GM's Plug-in hybrid Volt?
took an image beating when it backed away from a pledge to put 250,000 hybrids on the road by 2010. Arguably, the Prius hybrid halo has enabled Toyota's more recent play for the American's profitable big SUV and truck market. Regardless, GM ought to be producing the Volt now with the best available batteries, a PHEV-version of the NiMH in every hybrid on the road and which took the EV1 140 miles between charges. "GM tries to unplug Volt hype" is not the headline I've been hoping to see out of Motor City this spring. But there it is in a Detroit News Autos Insider piece

Study outlines potential of plug-in hybrids
The Argonne National Laboratory has completed its study into the impact of real world drive cycles on the fuel efficiency and cost of different plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), with mixed results.
The Argonne team modelled four PHEV configurations: an input power split with a fixed ratio between the electric machine and the transmission PHEV with a 4kWh and an 8kWh pack; as well as a series hybrid with a 12kWh and a 16kWh pack. It found that while all PHEV demonstrated potential, the benefits of adding more battery capacity appeared to decrease as the pack size increased.

Toyota Hybrid Breakthrough! One-mile EV Range Highlander Hybrid!
Mistakenly blaming the battery type (NiMH) for the meager all-electric performance, AutoBlogGreen remains as confused as most auto journalists about plugs and cars, plug-in hybrids, electric cars, and batteries. Toyota could deliver a plug-in hybrid highlander, get 20 miles all-electric and 75 mpg using NiMH today! That's why every hybrid on the road uses NiMH. AutoBlogGreen has the details on the '08 Highlander, and it includes an EV mode! Now you will be able to move the car across the street for street cleaning days without using gasoline.
