Lexus is hitting the public with a one-two punch this week. The infiniti QX80 and GMC Yukon are a little too big, while something like the Acura MDX is a little too small. & Lexus says the back row will be more spacious, comfortable, and easier to get into than what was available on the three-row variant of the RX.

Alert readers will recall a new body-on-frame Lexus GX was introduced earlier this year, showing up with handsome squared-off styling and a twin-turbo V6 making 349 horsepower. Still, it’s neat to see what’s in the hopper for this off-road brute. But we’re glad the nameplate seems poised to make a return here at all.

Asian brands, led by Lexus, Toyota, and Mazda, in that order, continue to be the best for new car reliability in CR’s survey, which is the largest of its kind. When compared to the average non-turbo engine among 2016-2018 models, overall, Lexus makes the most reliable turbo powertrain, followed by Honda and Porsche.

Lexus ranked highest in vehicle dependability among all nameplates for a fifth consecutive year, with a score of 95 PP100. Porsche (97 PP100) followed Lexus in the rankings, moving up from fifth in 2015. Toyota awardees include the Lexus ES; Lexus GS; Lexus GX; Toyota Prius v; Toyota Sienna; and Toyota Tundra.

The luxury Lexus LS 600h L hybrid is the worst offender. It comes with more than $17,000 in forced features compared with the conventional, base model Lexus LS 460L. It emits 44% less global warming pollution than its closest conventional counterpart, the Toyota Matrix, and its hybrid drivetrain costs a little more than $3,000.

The new, dedicated hybrid Lexus HS 250 posted 1,407 units. Sales of the two-mode tahoe/Yukon/Escalade were down 36% to 489 units, representing 4.7% The Camry Hybrid sold 1,465 units, down 33% from the year before, and representing 5.3% of all Camry models sold. The Highlander hybrid posted 722 units, down 20%, representing 11.6%

On the Lexus side, the RX hybrid posted 527 units, down 60.4% GM hybrids currently comprise the Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Aura and Vue BAS hybrids; and the Tahoe, Silverado, Yukon, Sierra, and Cadillac Escalade two-mode hybrids. Highlander Hybrid posted 1,098 sales, down 27.3%; sales of the conventional Highlander models were up 8%.
