This stretch, called Iris, will link Iceland to Ireland. The station, called Fengning and located about 200 kilometers north of Beijing, will store up to 40 gigawatt-hours of energy, and help keep the grid on clean energy when the wind isn’t blowing or the sun’s not shining.

The message above was sent through the first transatlantic telegraph cable between Newfoundland and Ireland, way back in 1858. million km of submarine cables (Figure 1) in service, ranging from a short 131 km cable between Ireland and the U.K. It makes sense: Wind is stronger and more consistent over the open ocean than it is on land.

It’s very similar to the infrastructure for electric cars because the idea, ultimately, for electric cars is that you also are revamping your grid to facilitate, whatchamacallit, intermittent renewable energy sources, like wind and solar, because having an electric car that runs off a coal-fired power plant is defeating the purpose, essentially.
