UCS Hybrid ScoreCard Dings Automakers for Forced Features in Hybrid Offerings

The luxury Lexus LS 600h L hybrid is the worst offender. It comes with more than $17,000 in forced features compared with the conventional, base model Lexus LS 460L. The Honda Insight, conversely, has no forced features, delivers more than 40 miles per gallon, and emits relatively little global warming pollution.

The month also saw the debut of three new hybrids—the Honda Insight and the Ford Fusion and Milan—all of which only came on sale toward the end of the month. The LS 600h L sold 25 units, down 78% and representing 2.9% of all LS models sold. Sales of conventional LS models were down 59%.
