EcoCAR 2 requires students to explore a variety of powertrain architectures focusing on electric drive vehicle technology. Participating universities will use electric powertrains, next generation control systems, and advanced battery technologies to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

The vehicles and infrastructure being funded include the use of natural and renewable gas, propane, ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and hybrid technologies. The program includes the installation of 10 alternative fuel refueling sites (two B20, one Electric Recharging, and seven CNG). Total DOE award: $15,000,000.
