The Volt contract is important because the batteries are the most important element of the car and their reliability will make or break GM’s gamble to be the first company to put a plug-in — or grid-rechargeable — hybrid into the market. Having two suppliers would help drive costs down.

For the standard version, Tesla plans to use a battery that can recharge at a typical 220V outlet in about four hours. Nissan is working on an electric car that it says is on track to have a 100-mile range and 26-minute charge time. My parents live about 180 miles away, which is well outside the range of most electric cars.

BYD , for examples, says their 60 mile range-extended vehicle can add 30 miles of range in ten minutes. Please feel free to tell us what you believe to be the benefits of some of the various recharging modes mentioned above in the comments section below. I would prefer to recharge at home, and could do so.
