General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform. Committed to sales of 10,000 or more vehicles in late 2010, with increasing production in 2011. See Chevy Volt for latest. I want to stick around to see the Volt come to market.

I wish the thing was for sale as-is. The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. The extended-range version will be focused on retail customers. Looking for a better auto insurance rate?

Vancouvers trolley bus fleet operates at 600 volts and god knows how many amps. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. But the batterypack is the most expensive part of the car -- it can cost thousands of dollars and equate to half the vehicle price.
