The EPA rates fuel economy, when using the hybrid gasoline-only engine at 30 miles per gallon. This is excellent fuel economy for a 5,010-pound nicely styled shoe box. The regenerative braking system, which recharges the 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, converts kinetic energy into electricity when braking or coasting.

After a couple hours driving the VF 8 in San Diego County, here are our initial thoughts. So driving around town, stuck in stop-and-go rush hour freeway traffic or coasting down hills will recharge the battery. The battery charge and mileage range are metered in realtime by a readout on the center touchscreen.

Keep in mind this is a 5,010-pound aerodynamic shoe box getting this stellar fuel economy. San Diego to San Francisco?

Clean Fleet Report had a few hours in the 2022 Ioniq 5 on a wet day, leaving downtown San Diego, climbing to 4,226-feet going to Julian, an 1850s silver mining town now known for its apples. The Ioniq 5 qualifies for the federal $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit as does the Mustang Mach-E. Out on the Road.
