To date, the relatively high cost of batteries has kept electric and plug-in vehicles at the fringes of the auto industry. Waters worked on the battery for the General Motors EV1 and also worked at Ener1, which makes lithium-ion batteries. The car will go 30 miles on batteries before the gas engine kicks in and be street-legal.
