The prototype buses are expected to get the equivalent of 15 miles per gallon more than a regular hybrid bus. According to data collected by other transit agencies operating the Proterra bus, the battery-powered vehicles generate a cost savings of 49% per mile compared to a hybrid bus, and a 40% savings over a diesel bus.

But as I outlined in my recent article, How Many EV Charging Stations Will $10 Billion Buy for America? , PHEVs: Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) currently comprise nearly 37% of all EVs sold in the US since 2011. We clearly need to increase the amount of charging infrastructure we have to help drive EV sales in the US.

The cord that comes with the car just might suffice for many, especially plug-in hybrids which have smaller battery packs. If a complete overnight charge is the goal, 120V will still suffice for a Volt, but a 240V EVSE will be essential for most who buy an all-electric car. They’ve kept my LEAF juiced, after all.
