Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV): are hybrid electric vehicles with the means to charge their battery packs from an outside source of electricity (usually the electric grid). The planetary gear splits engine power between the first motor/generator and the drive motor to either charge the battery or supply power to the wheels.
