H ere's the Mazda story thanks to Autocar: Mazda plans Volt rival Autocar August 28, 2008 Autocar has learned that Mazda engineers are hard at work trying to develop a rival to the Chevrolet Volt – a car which uses a petrol engine to charge a battery pack which powers the wheels via an electric motor.

The fleet models will be part of a test bed for Toyota and future development of the plug-in Prius may at some point lead to a consumer model. The upcoming plug-in Prius will use the traditional nickel metal hydride battery system, but future versions will likely see the addition of a lithium ion battery pack.
