Monthly new vehicle market share for hybrids. Buoyed by the US government’s CARS (“Cash for Clunkers”) program, US auto sales slowed their decline in the US in July, dropping on 12.1% Hybrids had an especially good month, with reported sales jumping 31.8% to 19,173 units) and Ford hybrids (up 323% to 5,353 units).

Some manufacturers have focused on hybrids, others on electrics - but it is the clean diesels of Volkswagen that are reaping the rewards in the USA. Volkswagen of America posted July 2009 sales of 20,590 units - that’s a 0.7 per cent increase compared to the same month in the previous year. It accounted for more than 3,300 sales.

Quicke sidenote: PHEV3A as an acronym now encompasses the Tour de AZ: "Spirit of DC" Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around Arizona (PHEV3A) EVducational Tour (tho it could change, depending on sponsorship to AAA Tour de AZ, or even eTour de AZ). In fact, "Cash for Clunkers" should also be expanded to "Cash for Conversions!"
