The Jetta SportWagen for the third consecutive month posted its best sales month ever with sales of 2,415 units; clean diesel TDIs represented 81% of SportWagen sales, and 40% of Jetta sedan sales, which totalled 9,663 units. Buoyed by the US government’s CARS (“Cash for Clunkers”) program, US auto sales slowed their decline in the US in July, dropping on 12.1% The 2009 model Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid are the most fuel-efficient utility vehicles in America. Nissan North America reported sales for July of 71,847 units, a decrease of 24.6%.

Some manufacturers have focused on hybrids, others on electrics - but it is the clean diesels of Volkswagen that are reaping the rewards in the USA. Volkswagen of America posted July 2009 sales of 20,590 units - that’s a 0.7 per cent increase compared to the same month in the previous year. It accounted for more than 3,300 sales.

Plug-ins would simple be either pure EVs or PHEVs, and hopefully tapping into homegrown American electrons for the drive to have America energy independence once again.
