MSS capitalized on fiber optics to collect data at four different spectral bands (visible green and red, plus two bands of near-infrared). The satellite then transmitted the signal to a ground station; if no station was within range, it stored the data on magnetic tape for later transmission. Norwood and built by Hughes Aircraft Co.
