The first was a television-style camera system (called a Return Beam Vidicon, or RBV) built by the Radio Corporation of America. As part of its War on Drugs, the CIA used Landsat imagery to reveal an increase of acreage committed to poppy in Afghanistan in 1985 and the resulting expanded opium trade.
