Why, simple the US embraced Fracking to produce bountifully supplies of cheap gas. In 2019, the Government once all keen on low priced UK gas did a U turn after succumbing to environmentalists’ pressure groups. Smart Meters waste. Right now, production is low in Russia, so the cost has increased. No Fracking.
