According to Autos Insider of July 12, 2007 Toyota, which has sold 1 million hybrids worldwide, including 750,000 in the United States, over the last decade, said converting a hybrid risks vehicle fires, and actually increases greenhouse gas emissions. However, the cars can run only short distances before they run out of juice.
