At the end of the past decade Volkswagen decided to build a dedicated Technology Center for Electric Traction near its headquarters in Wolfsburg, to further advance its capabilities in fuel cell development. The Isenbüttel site was chosen for this center and construction of a special research center for electric drivetrains began in 2001.
